Consumers have many choices when it comes to purchasing giftsfor their friends, co-workers, and loved ones at Christmas time.Depending on the age of the recipient, the range of giftcategories can be massive. For example, if one is purchasing agift for a young child, under the age of 6, the gift options canrange from clothing to toys. If, on the other hand, one ispurchasing a gift for an adult male or female the choices canrange from tools to more personal items such as sexy lingerie,shoes, or couple games. Why do people purchase gifts forChristmas? Based on how we have been raised in our society, agreat majority of Americans either buy the gifts because oftheir emotions or feel a sense of obligation to buy gifts fortheir friends and relatives at this special time of year.Ironically, we, as Americans, look forward to that special timeof year when we can open our hearts and let someone we know thatthey are special and appreciated. Giving and receiving gifts atChristmas makes us feel as though we are an accepted part of oursociety. It makes us feel good inside; giving us a sense ofpride and accomplishment to be able to give to others. Let'sface it, almost everyone looks forward to December andChristmas. It fills us with hopes and dreams of things to come.The excitement can be felt in the air and the joy it brings isimmeasurable. There is another reason we purchase gifts duringthe Christmas holiday season and it is economically based.Economically, it lowers unemployment because additionalpersonnel are needed to handle the additional traffic throughthe retail outlets and sites. Additionally, it lowers inflation,creates a boom the stock market which in turn makes peoplewealthier, and raises consumer confidence. People's shoppingmethods have changed over the years. At one time, everyone madea trip out to the local department store or outlet and spenthours picking out each individual gift, price was not a factor.Now, consumers seek the highest quality goods and the lowestprices and many do much of their shopping on the internet. Withall the options people now have when it comes to purchasinggifts, they are able to purchase what they want, when they want,and at a discounted price. This type of shopping only encouragesus, as a society, to do what is traditional and that ispurchasing gifts for our friends, co-workers, and loved ones atChristmas.
