Get More From Your Camera Phone
It seems that in recent times, it's no longer the case that themain use of a mobile phone is to make phone calls. The cost ofmanufacturing miniature components has fallen dramatically, allowing us access to a host of multimedia applications on thelatest mobile phones. We can now take pictures, listen to music, watch and make videos clips, access the Internet, make notes andeven make phone calls on our mobile phones!
Not so long ago, people commuting to work may have taken withthem a mobile phone, maybe a personal organiser and some form ofmusic player to help alleviate the boredom of the journey. Somepeople in certain occupations like Estate Agents may have eventaken a compact digital camera for snaps. Now people can justtake their latest camera mobile phone with them, which providesthem with access to movies, games, music, online shops, photos, voice recordings and so much more besides. The amalgamation ofthese gadgets and features into one compact, affordable deviceis really an amazing feat of engineering technology. Greatthough it is to have access to these fun features, a lot ofspace (or memory) is required to be able to store all theinformation. Most mobile phones off the shelf come with acertain amount of built-in memory (or internal memory), theamount of which varies from phone to phone, but generallyspeaking built-in memory is kept to a minimum. This is becausemanufacturers realised the build cost of mobile phones could bemassively reduced by building just enough memory into each phoneso that it is usable, i.e. there is just enough internal memoryin a phone so that it may function as a phone, plus allowing fora few music tracks and photos to be stored. So if you want toget a bit more out of your mobile it's essential tosubstantially increase its memory.
Increasing the memory is easy, all it involves is buying asuitable memory card and inserting it in the slot somewhere onyour camera phone, it really is that simple. Memory cards areavailable in various capacity which are measured in Mb i.e.128Mb, 256Mb, 512mb etc, the bigger the Mb capacity, the morepictures you can store. Recently memory cards have moved up toeven bigger sizes to cope with the memory requirements of manymultimedia devices, measured in Gb i.e. 1Gb, 2Gb etc, 1Gb equals1000Mb so now you can work that out!
The exact amount of data you can store on a certain size memorycard is difficult to work out because of the various formats ofdata being stored for music, images, data etc. Generallyspeaking photos, video clips and MP3 music files use up largeamount of memory space, e.g. an average pop song on MP3 will useapprox 4-5Mb of memory and video will use much more.
There are several types of memory cards available for mobilephones and only the correct type will work properly on yourphone. In most cases, there is also a restriction on the maximumsize of memory card you can use on your mobile phone, a biggercapacity card than recommended by the manufacturer may not workat all or even if it works, may cause loss of data or damage toyour phone in due course and invalidate any warranty. Our advicewould be to use more than one card as required, e.g. you may usea memory card for one type of music and another card for adifferent type of music, in the same way as you would use CD'sor tapes.
The best way to find out which memory card your mobile phonetakes is to check the owners manual.
