A Canadian government it seems cannot stand alone, unless theyhave a majority, then they can do what they want. Canadiansdon't see it often but in November 2005 a minority liberalgovernment was defeated by a conservative motion ofnon-confidence. This is possibly the most useless act in worldwide politics. Keep in mind I'm saying this one day after thegovernments defeat, and it won't be until January 23rd that I'mproven right, but I will be proven right. Before I get too farin I'll give you a bit of an explanation for those of you whodon't follow Canadian politics, non-Canadians can probably skipthis paragraph. Any member of parliament can move to vote on noconfidence, the government themselves can even do it. If thevote goes against the government they must either resign or callan election. In the case of the November vote, Stephen Harpermoved for a vote of no confidence, the first even successfulstraight vote of no confidence. Usually a vote of no confidenceis attached to a bill, the government will often use the vote ofno confidence to force through bills that its own party don'tagree with. If they don't vote for a bill with a no confidencevote attach they risk an election, and thus they risk theirjobs. So basically the vote of no confidence has been used byPrime Minister to keep their MP's in line. This is most usefulin majority governments when the PM knows that all they need istheir own party to vote with them. In this most recent case itwas a Liberal party that fell. Until recently the NDP werekeeping the Liberals in power. They do this sort of thing forother favours, you vote my bill I'll vote your bill, you don'tdefeat my government I'll add a pay raise for you here, etc...Seems useful right, seems the NDP may have something up theirsleeve right? Wrong. The NDP are more confused that theconservatives and the Conservatives don't know their head from ahole in the ground, and this is coming from someone who has onlyever voted conservative! Why is this whole process useless youmay be asking by know, for the same reason I'm just getting tomy point now, it's a waste of time. The Liberal government isjust going to be re-elected. They won a minority in the lastelection and they are going to win a minority again. TheConservatives are not trusted enough to win an election. Theirradical viewpoints may have been accepted twenty years ago, buttoday Mr Harper, most of us are ok with gay marriages, trypeddling that view point in the US. Fears from ancient Allianceand Reform policies, such as their gun policy, do not helpeither. Maybe the NDP will get elected? Fat chance, you're hardpressed to find someone who doesn't think of the NDP as a bigjoke. Well maybe the liberals will win a majority governmentthis time? That will be tough with the sponsorship scandal stillfresh in our minds. The result will be another minority Liberalgovernment, but first we need to pay for an election andelection campaigning over Christmas, hooray! The blame shouldlie in the conservatives lap. While the Liberals historicallyrule this country the Conservatives do get in once in a whileand make so advancement in directions the Liberals don't. So whycan't they get into power now that the Liberals look soterrible? The conservatives split into three separate parties.Canada has enough trouble just getting people to vote in thefirst place, now we have to worry about understanding partyaffiliation as well. And those who do vote are always going tovote for the party that allows gay marriages, abortions, and potsmoking. Oh yeah and if you think economic policy is going tochange someone's mind, think again. Economic policies have aboutas much place in the voters mind as they did in this article.
